What I Wore: Tatyana Alika Circle Dress

Twelve months ago, Melbourne was experiencing a summer that we Australians are known for: blistering hot days and no respite in the evening. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed these hot days and nights, though there was definitely some variances. On 2 February 2014, while official temperatures recorded at the Latrobe Street observation station (now closed) reached 39 degrees (Celsius; 102.2F), in Croydon, Victoria – 45 minutes out of the CBD where the BOM observation station was at the time – temperatures seared to 44 – 45 C (111.2 – 113F). Needless to say, I was really questioning my choice of dress for The Mister’s brother’s wedding.

Style Icon: Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe: A woman needing no introduction. A woman who, although I admire her greatly, I do not tend to count her as one of my style icons. Why? Simply put, there are so many others who do. Don’t get me wrong, Ms Monroe is incredible, but I’ve never really been a part of the flock, rather ahead or behind.

Christmas Wishes

It’s easily my favourite time of year, Christmas. I love the joy and cheer, the time spent with families, and the warmth of the season, which has two meanings for me. The first is that I love the warmth of the Christmas spirit – people doing lovely things for each other, people enjoying each others’ company, and people generally being in a good mood. The second is quite literal, the warmth of summer. Being in the southern hemisphere, we celebrate Christmas in the sun. Some places in Australia reach searing heat levels, but here in Melbourne, we tend to have a mild 25-30 degrees (Celsius, not Farenheit, but if you want to talk Farenheit that would be roughly 77-86 degrees). We still have all the trimmings, including roasts for lunch – boy that can be super hot! – we just wear summer clothes.

What to wear: Black Tie Wedding

Recently, we received an invitation to a Black Tie Wedding. It’s a family wedding, so I couldn’t wear just any old thing, nor did I have anything suitable in my wardrobe for such an event.

Here in Australia, it’s summer from December through to February. While I dreamed of a beautiful floor length gown with a vintage fur (or faux if I couldn’t find one in budget) and gloves, I knew it was just not practical. I did Google to see the parameters for modern day Black Tie standards, and found that cocktail gowns are deemed appropriate. I found the perfect dress (see Black Tie Wedding: The Winter Edition for styling) but as it was on its way to me I realised I ordered a size up from my regular size. Bother! It was well too big, and just as well because it was fully lined and velvet – not ideal for a summer day!

An agonising process, I waited a little longer before placing an order at ModCloth on Cyber Monday. I’d been hoping the dress I was eyeing off would be a Black Friday special but alas it was not. Thank goodness for Cyber Monday – although we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here in Australia, I know I sure am thankful for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales. The dress arrived to me a few days ago, and although it runs a little big around the waist, it fits quite well everywhere else. I sourced the perfect shoes (pictured) and think I’ve found accessories for my outfit, but need to put everything together so that hopefully it will turn out a little like what you see below in Black Tie Wedding: The Summer Edition.
